easiest way to distinguish japanese from chinese is that chinese has lots of "cha", "ng" (ng is common to korean too), and z sounds. Japanese is more focused on a-i-u-e-o sounds.

Agree completely. Not to mention the fact that Chinese has so many dialects it makes your head spin.
